Hi Gents,

Just in case it is helpful for members I wanted to start this thread with some thoughts of mine on running panniers and how they impact the suspension or your Bobber. If you have experience of this then I invite you to share too.

Short Version (for those in a rush):
If you want to fit panniers to your Bobber you likely NEED to upgrade the suspension (IMO).

Long Version (for sad old gits like me who have 'too' much time on their hands :wink2: ):
Contrary to most of you chaps who embrace the Bobber concept and strip down their bikes, mine is carrying a little more weight than most, after all I like a girl with a few curves..:grin2:

Having said that, I have noticed that with the pannier rails fitted along with the panniers my stock suspension bottoms out, even at low speed and on small bumps. I'm running these mostly empty, just with some waterproof gear in. I pulled them off this evening (including the rails) and had no issues on the small bumps I've been paying attention to around the corner.

I have a Wilbers on the way and I'm hopeful this will solve the issue as I have heard only good things. But I wanted to share these thoughts with members as in my opinion running panniers on stock suspension is a non starter. I'm certainly not going to load these up with camping gear until the suspension is sorted.

I will update this thread once I get the Wilbers.

Cheerio,

Roy

Roy, did you spec the Wilbers for the extra weight? If so, you should be fine. But in the worst case i am sure A&J can sort you out with a new spring.

BTW, extra weight will also affect the front, so you may want to look in to uprated springs.
I went with the 9,5 N/mm springs.
Just a note, i am not sure if Ohlins springs work with the OEM cartridges (as i am running the FKS219 kit)

Thanks for that mate.

I spoke with Brian at A&J and on his recommendation it was ordered for my weight only as he said I could adjust it when carrying more weight, so fingers crossed.

I've not noticed any issues with the front yet but it's something I plan to keep an eye on.

Cheerio,

Roy
