There is a nut on the backside that you have to hold captive while you undo the bolt from the outside face. They will seem unnaturally tight, as if they are not intended to come undone (mostly because they are not)! That is for ignition security. Have faith, though; they will break loose with what seems excessive effort. If all goes well, you should be able to clean the thread locking compound off the nuts/bolts, and reuse them, if that is your desire. I just deleted the ignition switch altogether.

John has it spot on; you have to hold the back of the screw in order to release it.
In my thread HERE you can perhaps get a clearer idea of how its held in place.

Thanks Chaps,

Yes I got it. The bolt goes into what I thought was a tube which just span when I tried to remove the bolt. With a flashlight I noted that 'tube' had a hex internal, so a long allen key running to the other side of the bike while I undid the bolt. All worked fine.
