Just a consideration but if you ever plan on a fender rack or panniers then the license plate mounted lights would be better (and you can use the stock wiring harness). I don’t plan on using bags so not an issue for me.
'm backpack boy, so no rack. If I can figure out how to do a short fender without a side license plate I may do that too at some point.

How many of those plugs do I need - one or two? I'm assuming that from there I can just unplug the stock from some kind of main plug inside the bike and plug the new ones in? Just trying to make sure I order everything in one shot...

Ordered plate and lights from A&J, and one plug, 12 pins from Digi-Key. (I have the shrink wrap and wire)
Will post back with progress!

I read that licence plates are on the way out and vehicles will be built with a digital transmitter that allows police and other services to instantly get a computer reading of any vehicle,it’s registration and rider. Until then, I’m curious, as some states/provinces restrict side mounted plates, would a bike with a side mounted plate from a legal state be ticketed or impounded in a state that restricts side plates? I know in Canada side mounted plates are restricted. Anyone have any experience with the laws?

I’d order DealerTool and just do all the maintenance yourself. Pretty basic stuff.

I bought these connectors, 22AWG wires, and associated pins to make my own harness: https://www.digikey.com/product-det...WMUxuVTQrQlNlVWFjU1hlcWkxQUEzcUpkWnBETUJlIn0=

The other ends were soldered and covered in a braided sleeve + shrink tubing. It’s time consuming but a much cleaner install.
So, I'm having major issues. There are now 3 running light wires (license plate, and the two from the multi-function signals) and only two on the harness plug. It seems if I connect the license plate light to one of the running light wires the system works... or not... Then I put it all back together and nothing, just some erratic blinking, and that's it. This has become a MAJOR PITA.
Any ideas?

Yeah I ran into the same issue at first. I thought the aux (license plate light) and the running lights were the same. So I tapped the aux wire for the 2nd running light. Got very weird results and kept blowing the aux fuse. Restarted and made sure to only tap the running wire for all running lights. Worked fine after that.

Not sure if you guys know this, or even if it would help in anyway? But, there is a second plug tucked up in the battery box to break out the license plate light wires, for when you use the triumph side plate. It has a blanking plug in it from the factory. The original harness for the stock long fender, has an extra wire for the license plate light integrated I believe, its been awhile.. If I'm not mistaken the option you pick, through the speedometer, determines which wires are powered.

Not sure if this helps, or complicates things further. :|

Yeah, man, exactly. Still dont understand though... The schematic for the bike shows that any of those running light connections are connected to the bus - theyere all the same elecrically... Unless I missed something. I didnt really study it hard.
Anyway, there are two running lights on the plug. One next to left signal, and one next to right. Which is it ?

Heck yeah thats awesome to know! I'm going to totally re-make my harness anyway so its super clean and skinny. Right now its fat and has too much shrink tube... plus my error corrections. Ill see if I can break it out to utilize that plug - if I can find it...
Wish I had known. The NRC cycles kit comes with that plug. Would make install so much easier. It didnt come with instructions, though.

I'll take some pix and do a writeup for other folks who want to do this.

Footnote. The bike looks awesome. Pictures dont do it justice. IRL, the mod really makes the back stand out. Tire looks bigger, the whole back looks leaner and meaner.

It still has me buffaloed. Leaving the white wire from the tail plate kit disconnected is the only way to keep from popping fuses. As long as I do that, the x-arc's work perfectly.
I've wired it to either yellow wire with the running light to the other. Tried tying all 3 to one, and then to the other running light wire. Nothing works. I simply don't know what else to do at this point, other than to just not have a license plate light.
I've wired it according to the schematic. But what I don't understand is why they have a second lead coming off the main running light. It's all tied together electrically, so it shouldn't matter. Even so, I've tried every combination, to no success.

There is no second plug that I can see on my '18 Black. There may be one on other models and/or years.

Sounds almost exactly like what I went through. Sadly I made my harness earlier this year and don’t remember exactly how I wired it and it’s all covered up by nylon tubing now. It did take me a couple of weeks of hair pulling to get everything working so I can sympathize. Try assembling everything off the bike first then, once it’s working properly, reattach it. Keep at it, as much as it’s a pain it’s definitely worth doing.

**Sigh**

Belay all of that. I found the auxiliary license light connector. It was well hidden and has a blanking plug on it, but it's in there.

I feel like a moron.

My guess is that there's a resistor on that lead, somewhere before it connects to the main bus. - Which wouldn't be shown in the schematic I referred to, because it's really just a wire routing diagram, not an actual schematic.

oatmeal, I'm sorry I didn't see this thread sooner!, I'm glad you found it, and It worked out (it did work out didn't it?).

I wouldn't feel to bummed, I had the Triumph instruction set, and some coaching from the Dealership, so I knew roughly where that little bugger was, and it still took me laying on the floor for roughly a half an hour with a flashlight, poking and prodding things in the battery box to find it.

Its definitely well hidden away in there.

No, actually... Now that I know where the second plug is, it all instantly made sense. One must order both plugs (one is an 8 space, and one is a 2 space) to make both sets of lighting work. So, I ordered the second plug - which is back-ordered until Sept. 15th! Dammit! LOL
When I get it, I will re-do everything so it looks factory stock. For now, I have both signal lights working. I'm missing the plate light, but I doubt any cop will give me too much grief over it in the next month.

Yeah, that's for sure. I had a little mirror and flashlight and missed it the first two times I went looking for it. I may do a little write up with pix next month. The lights are a reasonably simple task, and well worth it, but there are definitely a few things I wish I'd known before I started.

But didn’t you loose hazard lights when you got rid of the hyper-flash?
No, hazards work perfectly and I use them everyday while splitting. I have the 360 fronts and X-Arc multi rears. Info button says bike was originally on Type 3 from dealer. After I switched to Type 2 (or maybe it was Type 1?) no more hyperflash and everything works correctly. I did have to mess around with the magnets to program the X-arcs (PITA).

I totally forgot about those X-arc magnet thingies! I'll have to look into that to sort out my hyperflash issue. Thanks for jogging my memory @kilyung.

Moved mine from one type to another, can't remember which - I think it was type 3 to type 4. Works perfectly now.
And yeah, those magnets are kind of tedious, but it's also kinda cool that it works like that. I ended up just going with the basic turn signal pattern, and a quick flash at the beginning of the brake lights.
