Air Box Removal Remap/safety?

I've been looking at all the pictures/posts about air box removal and it looks easy and in my opinion makes the bike look even more bad*ss. Two questions I can't seem to get a clear answer on are

1. Does removing the air box and placing pod filters require a remap? Some suggest yes others no if just air box and no exhaust. Other than air box I would plan to keep the exhaust stock.

2. Will doing this adversely effect the engine in any way even if a remap is not required? Mainly looking to do this for looks not performance gains. Wouldn't want to do it at the expense of harming performance/engine.

Thx in advance,
