Adding Cruise Control - tech question

Question for the group. Anyone pick up the cruise control module and do install themselves?

The install is simple enough but then the instructions indicate an ECM reflash is needed BEFORE firing up the bike.

I am happy to support my local dealer when buying parts, but I'd rather do easy mechanical work myself. However, getting the bike to the shop afterwards for reprogramming without riding it there is a challenge.

Just curious if the instructions are over cautious or if the bike won't otherwise be safe to ride. I don't expect the cruise function to work until reprogram, but is there another issue to be wary of?

I'd like to know as well. My dealer wants to hold on to my bike for almost a week to do the 500, install heated grips and the cruise control.

Update:

Module installed. Runs like a charm. ECM reprogram set for Friday. Should fully operational and ready for cruising!

So ECM reflash was NOT needed before firing up? Does the cruise work now?

ECM reflash is needed, but you can do the level and module install yourself. Have to peel back the tank and undo clutch cable, remove hand grip and then the stock module. Then button it all up. Was a good little project. Saved the labor as the dealer is going to charge me $129 cdn for the reflash.

Clarification:
@MikenLbk Misread your question. Bike will fire up without any issues with new module installed. Reprogram is needed to activate the cruise function.

Got the reprogram completed. Cruise works like a charm! Also got a chance to sit on the bobber fitted with apes and statement seat. Like the bars, seat looks great but not so comfy.

Cool. Let's see pics with those apes.

I did 650 miles in the past two days---can't wait to get my cruise control installed. The only bad part of the ride was how cramped my right hand kept getting.
