Are White-Wall Tyre's Right For You.?

Greetings Fellow Bobber/Speedmaster Enthusiasts,

I have now been running white-wall tyre's on my 'SpeedBobber' for a few weeks now, so thought I would post a review and some comments in the hope it may help those who are considering this option.

I must confess I have never had any vehicle fitted with white-walls and was on the fence for quite some time as to whether or not this upgrade was the right choice for me. Now I have lived with them fitted for a few weeks and done around 1,000 miles or more I can say that 'for me' it was the right choice, I'm thrilled with my decision and would certainly do it again. However they may not be the right choice for you, so wanted to share some thoughts.

First off locating and purchasing a set of Avon Cobra white-walls was not as easy as I had expected. I could not find a suitable pair of these tyre's here in the US. I ended up having to go through my Triumph dealership who ordered them in from the UK and shipped them on to me. I forget the exact cost but with purchase, shipping and fitting the final cost was a little over $600 USD as I recall, so not an inexpensive option. Fortunately I was in no rush but the whole process did take some time.

As a tyre option Avon Cobras speak for themselves, superb as always so no need to comment further.

The while wall I have since found out is solid white rubber, so this is very durable and one can clean them up to your hearts content without concerns of reducing the white wall itself. Something I did not know.

There are lots of products but to be honest the best I have found is an ample amount of 'elbow-grease' a kitchen scrubby and some warm water with washing detergent. Nothing special is needed at all.

Chain lube is a pain by the way, so hardly put any on mine and plan to get a belt-drive conversion at some point.

I would hesitate running white-walls IF A: you don't like or have the time for cleaning, or B: you live in an environment that makes it hard to keep your bike clean. I currently live in the dry, sunny state of Arizona and I love to putter with my Bobber finding something to clean every day, so no problem for me at al..

Aesthetically, I love the look. As a contrast to the 'black' of my Bobber Black and especially as it pics up the white in the (Speedmaster) tank badge, I think it looks splendid.

So there's my tupence worth for your interest.

Cheerio,

Roy

Thanks for the write up.

Your bike looks amazing!

I’m not a fan of the big screen (aesthetically speaking), but understand that it serves a purpose and probably works well. But the rest is just perfect and the white walls really make it pop.

Thanks for that mate,

I know what you mean about the windshield, as I was on the fence myself or a while. Although I have to say it looks much more imposing in photographs than it does in reality (no idea why that is). I actually have come to love it, as it's really practical but 'the look' has really grown on me, reminds me of those 1930's American Police bikes.

Not for all I know but I'm digging it big time. The bike is kinda like 1930's motorcycle cop meets Batman..

Cheerio,

Roy

Same here.

Roy,
Iím actually surprised you had a hard time finding the tires in the states.
Can you elaborate some more on that.

Yes, happy to,

I had a few on-line tyre specialists recommended to me and made some enquiries. One dealer (as I recall) had just one tyre in and other dealers said they were out of stock with no date for new deliveries. I also spoke with a local motorcycle parts shop who attempted but failed to find any, another brand was offered but I declined wanting to hold out for the Avons.

As a result I fired off an email to my dealership where I purchased the bike remembering that they ordered and fitted some for another customer. Their reply was very encouraging and straight forward and they ordered them immediately, so I went with that.

Subsequently they shipped them to me and when able took them down to a local (relative) shop to have them fitted.

Cheerio,

Roy

Iím in Orange County CA, and had no problems getting the new Avon chrome white walls. The shop mentioned they were coming from Texas.

I absolutely love them.

I love the look of white walls, but I'm not a fan of the Avons, because the stripe is a different width depending on the tire diameter, which isn't an issue on the Bobber Black, but definitely is on the original Bobbers. I'm planning on going with the Metzler white walls when it's time to replace my tires (probably this Fall, as I just surpassed 6,000 miles on the OEM tires on my 2018 this weekend). From pics I've seen online, the Metzlers seem to have the same strip thickness regardless of wheel diameter. I guess we'll all find out for sure this Fall.

You've got a great looking, one-of-a-kind bike there, Roy. Congratulations on bringing your dream bike to fruition!

Hi ysoslo,

Many thanks for those kind words. She's getting there but I still have lots of plans to continue the pursuit of perfection..

That's a good points about the white-wall width and something to consider if fitting these to a standard Bobber, thanks for pointing that out.

Cheerio,

Roy
